American Idol producers are allegedly discussing backup judges because Lionel Richie recently underwent a heart procedure. Richie canceled three concerts following another hospitalization. His representative says the procedure went well and that he is expected to recover. A source tells the website, “Nobody is firing Lionel today, but his seat is no longer something producers can simply assume is filled. His health has changed the conversation. This is the conversation nobody wants to have, but Idol has to protect Idol. Lionel is beloved, but if there is any question about whether he can handle the schedule, they need someone else ready to sit in that chair.”
