The first time I met the legendary George Strait was at his concert at the old Orlando Arena. Big Red & I went backstage and when I stood beside George I was in awe and too nervous to say anything but hello. George was extremely quiet and soft spoken and said very few words. So I vowed the next time I would try to strike up a conversation with him. The next time was at a George Strait Music Festival at the old Tampa Stadium. That night he shot the video for “Write This Down” and even sang the song twice to get it right. It may be the only time he has ever sang that song back to back twice in concert. Before he hit the stage I asked him a question about living in Texas or something like that and again he really didn’t respond to me. The next time he was coming to Jacksonville for a concert and I had a guitar for him to sign. Perplexed i asked his record company representative “What can I say to him to get him to talk to me?” He said “Talk to him about horses”. So…when I walked up to him backstage I said “Hi Mr. Strait! I hear you buy horses at OBS in Ocala sometimes. How did it go?” His eyes lit up and he turned on and started chatting away with me like I was an old friend! He told me how he comes to Ocala and eats at Cracker Barrell there with a ballcap and glasses on and went on and on. He gladly signed the guitar and posed for all the pictures! The photo above is from the shooting of his Write This Down video in Tampa. Lesson learned. If you want George Strait to talk to you. Just talk about horses! lol.
