Rubbin Elbows-Billy Ray Cyrus

93.7 K COUNTRY

One of the more colorful and interesting careers in country music has to be that of Kentucky native Billy Ray Cyrus.  He released his debut album “Some Gave All” in 1992 and off of that album was the mega hit “Achy Breaky Heart”. It was a chart and dance sensation.  He even did a sold out show at the O’Connell Center that year at the University Of Florida. In 1993 I was in Nashville as a tourist and was standing on a street in downtown Nashville when all of the sudden a stretch limousine pulled up beside me and the window slowly rolled down. It was Billy Ray Cyrus! He looked at me and smiled and tossed out to me one of his shirts with the sleeves cut off and said “Some Gave All” on it. I was in shock holding the shirt as the limo then slowly drove away into the neon lights of lower Broadway.  Of course after that I became a huge supporter! In 1999 I went to Nashville again for the Country Radio Seminar and me and my General Manager at the time Boss Jim got invited to a party at Billy Ray Cyrus’s mansion on the outskirts of Nashville by the late Bob Kingsley of Country Top 40 Fame.  At the party I got to hang out with Billy Ray and he gave us the run of the mansion. He was so kind and humble and grateful for all radio had done for him.  I was in the living room which had a plush white carpet and was about to get a glass of red wine and Tish Cyrus Billy’s wife told me I better not spill it on her white carpet! At that moment a cute little girl came up to ask Tish a question and then ran off. I later found out that that was Miley Cyrus! A future superstar herself! The party was so much fun! I will never forget that! I was so happy that years later in 2019 Billy Ray Cyrus had a major # 1 song on the Country, Pop and Hip Hop charts with Lil Nas X on “Old Town Road”. It spent 20 weeks in a row at # 1 ! He will also be at the Suwannee River Jam this year in April!
