MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – A Miami man was killed early Wednesday morning in a wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 27 in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers say the 27-year-old man was driving a sedan westbound in the eastbound lanes of US-27 when he collided head-on with an SUV. The SUV, driven by a 69-year-old man from Perry, had been traveling in the proper direction in the eastbound lanes.
FHP says that the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The crash shut down US-27 for several hours during the overnight investigation. The roadway reopened around 5:10 a.m.
FHP continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
