OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) is warning customers to be on the lookout for scammers pretending to be utility employees in an attempt to steal money or personal information.
According to OEU, these impersonators may call or show up in person demanding immediate payment, often requesting prepaid cards, wire transfers, or debit card information. In some cases, they falsely threaten to shut off power unless payment is made immediately.
OEU officials stress that they will never:
- Demand payment over the phone using prepaid or debit cards
- Visit a customer unannounced to sell products or request personal information
- Disconnect service to businesses after hours or on weekends
“If something feels off, call us first,” OEU said in a statement. Customers can verify any suspicious activity by contacting the utility directly at 352-629-2489.
To protect yourself, watch for these red flags:
- Pressure to pay immediately
- Requests for personal or financial details from unknown callers
- Demands for payment through wire transfers or in-person meetings
OEU encourages residents to hang up, shut the door, and reach out if they’re unsure.
