CEDAR KEY, FL (352today.com) – Cedar Key, known for its historic charm and natural beauty, suffered yet another blow.
The small town is still recovering from Hurricane Idalia that hit in August 2023, and more recently from Hurricane Debby that hit last month. The last thing it needed was another disaster.
And then a devastating fire broke out.
Robinson credits several agencies for assisting throughout the day. “We had Chiefland, Fanning Springs, Bronson, Williston, the Levy County Department of Public Safety,” he says. Fire chiefs from Chiefland and Williston were also on hand to help, Robinson mentions, as well as the fire chief from the Lake County Department of Public Safety.
Robinson says that the fire started in the building that was once Duncan’s on the Gulf Seafood Restaurant. “That’s not there anymore,” he says. “Duncan’s was damaged from Hurricane Idalia. They were in the process of trying to get documentation to start repairs.”
Robinson also mentions the Rusty Hook Bait Shop that was damaged during Hurricane Idalia was still open, as was Steamers. Both of those businesses suffered severe damages that the State Fire Marshal is investigating.
Another business that suffered damage was the Island Trading Post. They posted on their Facebook page, “This morning I woke up to the grave news that my [family’s] business was on fire, and we tragically lost everything. This business meant so much to me, and I am at a [loss] for words. Please help our [family] try to get through this day that changed our lives forever. Thank you for all the great years and we are looking forward to [getting] us back and better than before.”
The business has started a GoFundMe account to assist with rebuilding.
