DEVELOPING: Idalia impacting schools: Some systems canceling class ahead of storm’s arrival

TALLAHASSEE, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) is closely monitoring the forecast for Idalia.

Some school districts have already made the decision to cancel classes in advance of Idalia’s arrival.

Here is the current list of school closures/early dismissals in the 352 area:

K12 Schools

  • Alachua County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Citrus County Schools will have a half day schedule on Monday, Aug. 28, and will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Dixie County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Gilchrist County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Hernando County Schools will be closed from Monday, Aug. 28 through Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Lake County Schools will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Levy County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Marion County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Pasco County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Sumter County Schools will have a half day schedule on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and will remain closed through Thursday, Aug. 31.

State Colleges

  • College of Central Florida (CF) will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Wednesday, Aug. 30. Monday evening classes will continue as scheduled. The closure is for all sites, including the Ocala, Citrus, and Levy Campuses, Hampton Center, Appleton Museum and Vintage Farm, as well as online classes. Scheduled activities also have been cancelled.  CF plans to reopen Thursday morning for classes and all business operations, weather permitting. Monitor the CF website for additional updates.
  • Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) will be closing Monday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. and remain closed through Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Santa Fe College (SF) will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.

State Universities

  • Florida A&M University (FAMU) will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • Florida State University (FSU) will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • University of Florida (UF) canceled classes beginning at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 29, and continuing through Wednesday, Aug. 30. All academic and student-related activities, including online classes and exams, will also be canceled during that time.
  • University of North Florida (UNF) will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
  • University of South Florida (USF) will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.

FLDOE says they work closely with district leadership before, during and after natural disasters to ensure they have the resources necessary to resume normal operations as quickly as possible.
