Gainesville police arrest man suspected in shooting another man at Windsor Terrace Apartments

GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) arrested a man they believe shot another man at Windsor Terrace Apartments.

GPD says the shooting happened on Friday, Nov. 3, around 4:30 a.m.

Officers say they responded to the complex on SW 20th Avenue after receiving multiple phone calls from residents who said they heard a gunshot and found a man on the ground outside an apartment.

Officers say they developed 35-year-old William W. Murphy III as the person responsible for the shooting after talking to people in the area.

GPD says they found Murphy’s vehicle at Woodland Park Apartments on SE 4th Street. They staked out the apartment for several hours. They say Murphy came out of the apartment around 12:15 p.m.

As they approached Murphy, they say he took off running. During the chase, they say Murphy pulled out a firearm and threw it as officers closed in.

Officers finally caught Murphy and took him in. They say they’ve tried to speak with him, but he’s invoked his right to remain silent.

GPD has not identified the shooting victim but say he was shot in the upper body and is at Shands Hospital in critical condition.

Murphy has been charged with attempted homicide, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest without violence.

Police ask that if you have information that may help them in the case, please call Det. Whitney Williams at 352-393-7681.
