OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Many of us grew up alongside lovable animated animal sidekicks: Ariel’s adventuring friend Flounder, Cinderella’s helpful Gus and Jaq, Mickey’s loyal pal Pluto, just to name a few. These characters captured our hearts with their quirky charms and unwavering devotion. If you ever hoped to have your own by your side, now is your chance.

Meet Meeka, a 2-year-old pup from the Humane Society of Marion County (HSMC). She’s named after Meeko, the playful raccoon from Pocahontas. With her gentle spirit and curious nature, Meeka brings that same sense of mischief and loyalty to life.

She is a recent arrival at HSMC, having transferred from Marion County Animal Services, whose shelters are filling nearly to capacity.

The inspiration for her name? Her unique coat pattern, complete with a gray-and-tan striped tail reminiscent of a raccoon’s.

Meeka has a gentle and soft spirit, but a sharp mind. During her visit to North Central Florida Media, she stayed keenly aware of her surroundings, something Austin Burnett from HSMC shared is typical from her.

This caution didn’t dampen Meeka’s friendly spirit, though. Once warmed up, she was eager for the attention of her new friends. She’s also very social with other dogs and loves her time in play groups – so much so that her ideal home would probably have other dogs to keep her company.

You can meet other adoptable dogs like Meeka this weekend at HSMC’s 2nd Annual Dog Mom 5K on May 10. Bring your own pup out to Baseline Road Trailhead and walk, jog, or run either the 5K or the 1-mile loop. Participants receive a shirt and medal with their registration.

Online registration has closed, but tickets are still available at the event. The race starts at 8 a.m., but HSMC recommends arriving a bit early to get settled before the start time.
