Four caught red-handed: Litterbugs leave a mess at homeless camp

OCALA, FL – (352today.com) – Four people have been arrested on felony litter charges in SW Marion County.

On September 17, 2024, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says that Deputy Hunter Corne took Kyla Cole, Michael Gish, Barry Moon, and Pamela Robinson into custody for felony littering over 500 pounds. Cole was also charged with possession of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia.

On August 29, 2024, MCSO reports that Deputy Corne and Lieutenant Ryan Robbins went to several locations along SW Highway 200 where homeless camps had been established. They say that the property owner requested that the MCSO clear out the individuals living there. When they arrived, deputies say they discovered 12 people along with a large amount of trash and debris. The occupants were informed they needed to vacate by September 2, 2024, after collecting their belongings and cleaning up the area. They were given 55-gallon bags and told to leave them in a designated spot for pickup.

When they returned to the properties on Sept. 6, 2024, they say that Cole, Gish, Moon, and Robinson were still there, and not much had changed regarding the clearing of their items or trash. They say that Cole had been arrested earlier for other charges at one of the locations.

Marion County Solid Waste assisted in removing the debris and issued weigh tickets for the waste, according to MCSO. They say that the trash linked to Cole and Moon weighed 3,200 pounds, while Gish and Robinson were responsible for 4,200 pounds.

Deputy Corne obtained warrants for everyone involved, and they were arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail.
