GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – A man is in custody following a shooting late Wednesday night at the Walmart on SW 42nd Street, according to the Gainesville Police Department (GPD).

GPD says officers responded around 10 p.m. on April 30 to reports of an active shooter. Units from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol also responded to assist.

When officers arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. The store was cleared to ensure public safety, but the suspect had already fled the scene, GPD said.

According to GPD, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Drevon Parker, is a former Walmart employee who was terminated in 2024. Investigators say the incident began as a verbal altercation between Parker, the victim, and the victim’s wife outside the store, which escalated into a physical fight inside. During the altercation, Parker allegedly pulled a gun and shot the victim.

Parker’s vehicle and firearm were found in the parking lot. GPD says he later turned himself in at the department without incident. He was arrested for attempted murder and taken to the Alachua County Jail.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, underwent surgery, and is currently listed in stable condition.

GPD thanked its law enforcement and emergency service partners for their rapid response. The investigation is ongoing.
