Elementary school students unveil their winning bike lane icons from state Mobility Week design contest

CENTRAL FLORIDA (352today.com) – Every year, the Mobility Week Bike Lane Design Contest invites elementary school students from eight Central Florida schools to Picasso their own bicycle lane icon.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) created the event in recognition of National Bicycle Month. It’s also part of District Five’s Mobility Week initiative, which is held each fall. The initiative is a week-long celebration that encourages communities to explore safe, multimodal transportation options.

Many students participate in the contest. The winners get their brilliant designs painted on the streets located outside of their schools.

The winning students were announced this past week and given an artwork reveal to showcase their talent. FDOT also gave the students a certificate.

Students from eight elementary schools in District 5 won. Two of the schools are in the 352. The winners are as follows:

  • Ward-Highlands Elementary (Marion County) – Cameryn Egan, 1st grade; Laci Stone, 3rd grade
  • Grassy Lake Elementary (Lake County) – Landon Abdo, kindergarten; Eva Arenas, 3rd grade

“With so many students riding their bikes to school every day in Central Florida, it is our responsibility to educate them on how to do so safely,” said Libertad Acosta-Anderson, Passenger Operations Manager for FDOT District Five. “This fun competition inspires creativity while also encouraging safe cycling practices.”
