Citrus County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam offering 50% off your monthly internet/cable bill

CITRUS COUNTY, FL (352today.com) A deal to cut your cable bill in half would be attractive to a lot of people right now. Trouble is… one such “offer” is too good to be true.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning about a scam promising to save you a bunch on your internet/cable bill.

CCSO says they’ve received reports of citizens getting a phone call from a person claiming to work with Spectrum.

According to deputies, the caller claims to have a promotion sponsored by Target that would save customers 50% off their monthly bill.

CCSO says the “deal” instructs the customer to pay six months in advance with Target gift cards.

Deputies say these scammers are pretty sophisticated.

“This scam call goes to the extent of playing Spectrum commercials while you are on hold and giving you an activation code along with a phone number to call back,” said the sheriff’s office in a Facebook post.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has seen this exact scam for some time now. The FTC posted on its website more than a year ago warning consumers about this exact scam.

Regardless of where you live, the sheriff’s office reminds you that companies such as Spectrum will NEVER ask you to pay in gift cards.

“If you ever get a phone call pressuring you to buy gift cards and give the codes over the phone, this is ALWAYS some type of scam,” said the sheriff’s office.

Deputies say you should just hang up on these calls.
