MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The verdict is in from the Marion County Courthouse in Ocala in the Susan Lorincz case.
The Fifth Judicial Court State Attorney’s Office reports that 59-year-old Lorincz is guilty of Manslaughter by Use of Firearm in the death of her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens. The incident happened on June 2, 2023, during what the Marion County Sheriff’s Office says was a service call regarding kids trespassing on private property.
While deputies were driving to Lorincz’s apartment in the Quail Run community, they report getting a second call; this one telling them that shots had been fired. Deputies say they found Owens in the front yard of Lorincz’s apartment with a gunshot wound to her upper chest. They say Lorincz was taken into custody while first responders tried to save Owens.
The trial lasted a week. More than 30 witnesses were called by both the state and the defense.
“This case is undoubtedly a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence. The defendant’s choices have left four young children without their mother, a loss that will be felt for the rest of their lives,” said Bill Gladson, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney. “While today’s verdict can’t bring AJ back, we hope it brings some measure of justice and peace to her family and friends.”
Lorincz’s conviction could carry a 30-year stint in prison.
