HOMOSASSA SPRINGS, FL (352today.com) – A staple of Citrus County’s lore, who lived at the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for more than six decades, passed away on June 8, 2025, at the age of 65.

Affectionately known to his legion of fans as Lu, Luficer the hippopotamus held the distinction of possibly being the oldest hippo in the world, living into his mid-60s.

However, he was more than just an attraction at a wildlife park, he showcased his acting talents on the small screen, with roles on Daktari! and Cowboy and Africa, adding to his celebrity, drawing well-wishers to the wildlife park from around the world.
