ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Parents: You want your kids to go to school, right? What would they do without knowing their ABC’s and 123’s or the Pythagorean theorem for the older kids?
If you live in Alachua County, the school district is urging you not to procrastinate. They want you to register your children for classes now. The school year starts on Monday, Aug. 12.
Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) is especially emphasizing this for families who have recently moved to the area, or those who are moving elsewhere in the district that are now zoned to a different school.
The district says students can be registered Mondays through Thursdays at their zoned school throughout the summer.
“Summer is the best time for families to register students for school,” said ACPS Public Information Officer Jackie Johnson. “School staff have more time to help families who need assistance, and the wait time is much shorter than it will be as we get closer to the start of school.”
The district is motivated to get you to register your kids as soon as possible.
“Without accurate information on the number of students who will be attending a school, what grades they’re in and what courses and services they’ll need, scheduling and hiring are much more complicated,” the district said in a news release. “Other disadvantages of late registration include delays in starting class and fewer course options, particularly in middle and high schools.”
If your child is entering an Alachua County Public School for the first time, parents must visit their zoned school and have the following documents:
- Birth certificate
- Proof of a recent physical
- Proof of immunizations
- Two proofs of primary residence
While state law says schools must ask for a child’s Social Security card, the district says it’s not required for registration.
Families who have moved to a different school zone in the county, only need to only bring two proofs of residence.
