Alachua County Sheriff’s Office hopes hefty reward and advances in DNA testing will help solve cold case

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – On July 16, 2010, Lila Leach was attacked in her Newberry home.

The attack left her with injuries that eventually led to her death.

For 14 years, her case has remained unsolved. No one has been arrested in connection with the crime.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) is hoping a reward will spur new leads.

The sheriff’s office has partnered with Crime Stoppers and the Florida Sheriff’s Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program to offer an $8,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer.

The detectives who’ve been working the case aren’t just relying on reward money. ACSO says recent breakthroughs in DNA testing have opened new doors.

ACSO Public Information Officer Art Forgey says the department has partnered with DNA Labs International to re-evaluate evidence found at the scene.

“Although DNA evidence recovered in this case was evaluated in 2010 and 2011, science has progressed over the years,” said Forgey. “DNA Labs International has very specialized equipment that is well suited for evidence relevant to this investigation.”

The sheriff’s office implores anyone with information about who killed Lila Leach to provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (352) 372-STOP (7867) or submit it online here.
