58-year-old man arrested after mom discovers hidden cameras in daughter’s bedroom and bathroom

OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Ocala Police Department (OPD) has arrested a 58-year-old man and charged him with video voyeurism after a mom found cameras hidden in her daughter’s bedroom and bathroom.

OPD says the mom reported the case to officers on Friday, May 17, after she learned there was a small camera hidden in an electrical outlet in her young adult daughter’s bathroom.

Police say the device was blinking and the small lens could be seen from inside the electrical plug’s bottom ground outlet. The investigator says the outlet faced the shower and toilet.

Officers returned to the home two days later after they discovered another hidden camera disguised as a WiFi repeater in her daughter’s bedroom.

The mother told police the router was installed by 58-year-old John Butler a few years prior. The mom says she had a past relationship with Butler and he had lived with them for a time.

Detectives arrested Butler at his workplace, Butler Insurance, which is located on Blitchton Road in Ocala. They booked him into the Marion County Jail on Wednesday, May 22. Jail records show he was released the next day on a $3,500 bond. Records indicate Butler lives in Beverly Hills, Florida, which is in Citrus County.

“Crimes like this will not be tolerated and we will always strive to bring perpetrators to justice,” said the OPD in a post on Facebook. “Remember, always be aware of your surroundings to protect your personal privacy. Hidden cameras can be discreetly placed in everyday items like electrical outlets, routers, smoke detectors, and other household objects. Inspect your personal spaces, especially bathrooms and bedrooms, for suspicious devices.”

They say if you find anything suspicious, you should report it to the police immediately.
